Learn the Wisdom of Surviving from Peasants
Eventful year 2008 finally passed. All in a single year, Chinese experienced ups and downs: the snow storm in the South unseen for decades, the horror of train derailing, the howl of earthquake in Wenchuan, the passion of Olympics, the dramatic swing of stock market, the plague of global financial crisis and more. All of those pressed people's surviving space from all directions, costing many of their lives. The surviving wisdom of human was being tested by unprecedented challenges.
Some say God has happiness in one hand, pain in another. He may give them to a person in different order, but the same amount. It doesn’t matter if God exists, but natural law does. There are two sides about everything, and dialectics is objective. In agricultural civilization, production efficiency was low and people were subject to nature's will. There were killing and wars, but living environment was comparatively stable. War didn't last long and disasters were limited in regions. In the time of industrialization, although production efficiency improved substantially, commodity trade range expanded, two world wars participated by more countries with repeated economy crisis, there hasn't been a global disaster that affects every nation at the same time. But as the cyber-information era comes, the integrated global economy gave birth to "earth village", and promoted the formation of economic and political ties between countries and regions. Information changed the way of living, production and even the war, the form of economic crisis outbreak and human-made calamity. Disasters in country with major political or economic power can inflict the whole world in a short time. However, one has no choice of which times he is going to live in. when enjoying the benefit of industry civilization and the prosperity brought by era of information, they have to face the threat from deteriorating living environment and to summarize and improve their wisdom of surviving.
Wisdom comes from production and living. In the pool of human wisdom, those from peasants are most inspiring.
When most people are complaining about the economic slowdown, peasants don't believe in good weather for ever. Draught, flood and pests are also gifts from nature;
When most people are consuming "tomorrow's money", peasants keep firmly on spending what they have as ancestors told;
When most people are draining the society wealth with whatever approach possible, peasants believe in you harvest what your sow;
When businessmen presented fancy packages and touting, peasants believe in "no pains, no gains";
When young entrepreneurs are dreaming about easy money or profit out of the blue, peasants believe in "no free lunch in the world";
When most people are fickle and putting down ethics in the era of social transformation, only peasants are sowing, growing, harvesting and storing, in a smooth and rich life;
When most people are tuning their position, desire and voice up, peasants lay low, expect low and have the lowest voice in the society;
When most people are living faster, having more social activities, adding more material concern in social relationship, peasants never stop their contact with relatives. Relatives must exist for their life; love of kin is their reservation for future.
Being practical is the given characteristics of peasants;
Focusing on one's own duty is the foundation of peasants' life;
Tolerance is how peasants win favour;
Being diligent and frugal is peasants' tip of house holding passed down generations.
When year 2009 started with suspicion, speculation and uncertainty, let us learn some wisdom of surviving from peasants to put our throbbing heart back to normal pace. This might be the best way to survive the long winter.
This is my message for the new year.
