Long Titles and SEO

Page Titles are an important factor for search engines to determine the relevancy of a page for a specific keywords. Many webmasters have asked me that whether they should use Long Titles for their page or not. Here is a small post for those curious webmasters searching the internet for this one particular question.

Many people thinks that if they stuff their titles with lots of keywords then their pages will be ranked higher for those keyword searches. Well, this is partially true, it can rather get your site rank higher for the keywords in your title. But the drawbacks of such a technique are more than what it gives. Many SEO experts have the opinion that Google gives every title a total of 10 points. Well, if you have a Title consisting of 4 keywords such as "Affordable SEO Solutions in India", then Google gives a weight of 2.5 to every keyword resulting in a total of 10. So, if you have a title with only two keywords i.e. "SEO Solutions" then every keyword will get a weight of 5 points resulting in better search engine rankings.

There is one more reason for shorter titles being preferred by SEO experts. Most of the Google Searches have been observed to be between 2-4 keywords. So, if you have a shorter title with relevant keywords, there are more chances for your site ranking higher as the search exactly matches your title. Moreover, you will also get high quality search engine traffic for your site.

Conclusion:

Search Engines have almost ceased to give much importance to meta tags. In this case, Long Titles might result in poor SEO. Using Long Titles, simply makes your site to rank lower in search results for which they have been ranked higher with Shorter Titles. But with shorter titles, it's always been a difficulty to find attractive titles that are relevant to your text. Moreover, it's a well known fact that shorter the title, larger will be the search crowding.

Optimum Title Length: In my view, the optimum length of the titles is 4-5 keywords.

Domain Issue: Some webmasters have been wondering whether they should use domain name or not in the title. Well, there have been mixed opinions over this. Some SEO experts say that it does matter and probably yes, if we go according to the point system for title keywords. Some say no, as they think that Google is intelligent enough to differentiate between brand names and titles.
